My homeroom science class has a test on Monday regarding the plant and animal cell. Hopefully you have taken home your study guide. If not, I will post it at the end of this message.
Don't forget to bring in your can goods so that we can have the highest number of canned food. I would love to have a pizza party!!!!!
Science--- My first science class will began to learn about outer space. I am so syked about this unit because space is my favorite subject. If you have any questions about astronomy, write it down and don't forget to ask me.

Cells Study GuideNucleus – we used the Rolos to illustrate the nucleus- It directs the activity of the cell and stores a molecule call DNS, which determines the organism’s traits. Both animal and plant cell have this
Cell membrane- we used the orange squeezed icing. Is a thin covering that surrounds all types of cells. It allows food, water, and gases to enter and waste to leave. Both plant and animal have this
Cell wall- we use the twizzlers- only found In plant cells. Has a rigid layer that surrounds the cell membrane. It helps the plant stand upright.
Cytoplasm- we used the spread icing. Yellow for animal, and green for plant. Between the nucleus and the cell membrane is the cytoplasm. All of the organelles “float” within the cytoplasm.
Ribosome- We used the nerds- they are scattered through the cell. They are scattered throughout the cell. They assemble compounds call proteins, which make up the structural components of the cells, and they allow the cell to perform nearly all the chemical reactions. Both plant and animal
Lysosomes- We used M/M’s- help the cell break down nutrients and old cell parts. They are very common in animal cell, but rare in plants.
Vacuoles- we used Large white marshmallows for plants cells and small colorful ones for animal cells- These are sacs that are full of fluids. They store water, food, waste, and other substances of the cell.
Golgi apparatus- We used red gummy bears- they receive proteins and then process them for shipment out side the cell. They sometimes add compounds to protein that will protect them from being broken apart.
Chloroplast- We used Green gummies bears- Only in plant cells, they contain pigments that absorb sunlight. They absorb all the colors of the rainbow- ROYGBIV, except green. They use this energy to make food. This gives the plants their green color.
Mitochondria-We used acorns- they are known as the power plants of the cell. Inside them they break down sugar as they react with oxygen. This process released carbon dioxide, water and a lot of energy. The number of Mitochondria depends on the amount of energy the cell needs.
Endoplasmic reticulum – We used blue gummy worms- is a system of membranes and tubes, which creates pathways through which materials can pass through. There are two kinds of ER-rough and smooth. The rough is dotted with ribosome and secretes a lot of protein. The smooth ER is not covered by ribosomes. It breaks down toxic substances and controlling the levels of certain chemicals.

Hello Parents,
This has been a very busy day!!!! Play practice, vocabulary and spelling word pretests, science project presentations......so much....!!!
We have begun science project presentations today for my homeroom class. We will finish up in the morning, and I will have Mrs. Jameson's students present their projects tomorrow after lunch. We are still planning on taking our science test this Wednesday.

Dear Parents and Students,
We are moving through this year quickly!!!! The students are doing such a great job in their everyday routines. Remember that homework is given out every Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, and if your child forgets to write their homework down or if they forget the spelling and vocabulary words for the week, you can visit our classroom blog at http://shanel-lightfoot-brown.blogspot.com .
Our annual book fair will be held November 3, 2010 to November 9. Our class is scheduled to visit this book fair on 11/3 @11:20 and 11/4 @ 9:20. You can send in $20.00 or less for your child to get something nice.
All field trip money is due this Friday, November 5, 2010.
Our PTO play will be held on November 9th at 6:30. Please make sure if your child is in the play, that you have them at the school by 6:15. Your child should wear a combination of red, white, and blue. If you personally know a military veteran, you may make a poster with their name and military branch on it.
The A.R. Deadline is December 14, 2010
Theme Test
Every five weeks the fifth graders take a theme test to show their understandings of reading and language arts skills. The first one was given five weeks ago, and the second theme test was given last week. There was a 45% increase in average scores in just my class alone. I am extremely proud of your child. They may continue to do well in the theme test if they keep up with their homework and consistently pay attention in class. The next theme test will be November 19. The skills that they will be tested on are: Generalizations, compare/contrast, character’s traits and motivations, common/proper nouns, and singular/plural nouns. So, please make sure your child is doing his/her homework each night.
There will be no school on 11/11/2010 for Veteran’s Day!!!!!!!
I want to thank all of the parents who sent in food and supplies for our last week’s Fall Party.
